I mentioned earlier that I run the Peachtree on July 4th. This was my first Peachtree (only my second 10K) I had a great time. For better or worse it seems that someone scheduled this race to coincide with the annual AH4 Peachtree Pub Crawl.
I've participated in the Pub Crawl twice, it is never pretty. I was hoping that by running the race, I would be able to avoid a couple of hours of drinking and some how be able to function for the day. The plan almost worked.
After twisting my knee I felt I would not be able to run. Oh well, I just do what I can and get my t-shirt. After talking with a few friends we decided to meet up at the start of the pub crawl and run the race from there. I did pretty good, keeping up with some of the faster kids, even after a couple of beers at the start. Somewhere before the big hill, I had a wardrobe malfunction and had to pull out of the race for a bit while I tried, without flashing 10,000 people, to fix the bra strap that came undone.
I was now on my own and less than motivated. I kept scanning for the beer stops, all but ready to give in to the call of Terrapin. I came upon the last beer stop, manned by my friend Harold, there waiting with him where my other friends, Paul, Bill and Melissa. I stopped ready for a beer. Harold said I couldn't have one until my number was marked (i.e. I had picked up my tshirt) then out of the crowd emerged Frank (another hasher friend). Frank had about 4-5 beers at the start and we thought him lost to the pub crawl. Happy to see him and with renewed enthusiasm we headed off towards Piedmont Park and the much coveted Peachtree Tshirt.
We finished in non-record time, got out picture taken crossing the finish line and weaved our way through the crowd to pick up the shirt. We then ran back to the last beer stop (yes, Harold's) just has the pub crawl came strutting in.
We had a few beers, had my heart crushed just a tad, and everyone started to head back to Black Bear Tavern for the on-in. I hung back a bit, not sure if I wanted to continue...the smell of sweaty hashers and beer won and Frank and I headed back.
We had a few extra beer stops, sponsored by generous spectators. The rest of the day became a blur. It ending about 9 pm with me being driven home from The Glenwood and poured into bed.
