Retro night in da 'hood

Tuesday night was like stepping back in time. It was a lot of fun.

A couple of weeks ago I set my mind to expanding my circle of friends and activities. My friends are great and we always have a fun time but I not going to meet 'Mr. Right' hanging out in my back yard drinking a Sunday afternoon away. I found myself settling into a very comfortable rut, that I need to get out of soon.

So after CRHB not calling one night, the stress of the holidays getting to me and a few other things I came to a cross-roads of sort...either I needed to make a change or I was going over the edge. That night I signed up for several meetup groups and vowed to become more involved in the neighborhood.

So on Tuesday night I attended my first EACA pot luck dinner. The fact I knew CRHB was going to be there encouraged my attendance even more. I was a little late, having to deal with the painters at the house, I listened to the police report, voted on some zoning requests and blushed when CRHB saw me and winked. Afterwards dinner was served. We ate together, talked to the neighbors, I bumped into an old hasher...I was then headed across the street to meet Kay (aka Tasty Pie) for a few drinks with her and her mommy friends. CRHB said he would pop over later, he had a few things to do before then. I hung out with the ladies...everyone seemed to know everyone...CRHB stopped by the table, of course knew one the the girls (ATank). He had to go talk to someone else so then we all gossiped about our new 'relationship', they all approved.

It just seemed very small town...in a good way. The community out and about, people going from table to table, checking in on everyone. Very retro in a new urbanism kind of way. It may seem a little silly but I think it is wonderful.

Christmas Thoughts

Here are a few of my thoughts on Christmas, good, bad and ugly.

I've always wanted to have a wonderful Christmas but it has just never happened. I've spent the majority of them alone, as it looks like I will again this year. That being said if you are going to celebrate for fuck sakes do it right.

My new friend LOVES the holidays, he knows I run and bike in the 'hood a lot and he has asked me to keep an eye out for any homes decorated for the holidays that stand out. Normally I don't pay much attention but for him...okay.

What has happened over the past few years? The scenes are dreadful, no style, no elegance...it seems that people toss out a few random inflatable figures and call it a day. Like this -

Lazy holiday decorating

Two Tiggers, two Santas, a Grinch and random white animals?? What the hell??

It almost makes me want to decorate just show how it SHOULD be done.

Pub Crawling

Here is one tradition I can get into. This year will be my 4th year participating and my 1st year as a hare for the AH4 Holiday Pub Crawl. My friends and I will be wandering the streets of East Atlanta Village drinking our holiday cheer. I even heard a sexy, Mrs. Claus will be making an appearance...I wonder if Jangles will show up also...I heard they have a thing going. Shhh don't tell Mr. Claus.

Christmas Stories

A Christmas Story was one of my father's favorite movies. I'm sure he related well to the story of a boy growing up in small town Indiana in the 40s. I just found it strange because that was pretty much the only part of Christmas my father enjoyed. He mood took a deep, downward spiral when the holidays approached. This surely was due to the fact that Dec 24th was my parents wedding anniversary. After my mother's death, Christmas was never, ever the same. It was pretty much ignored by my father and any attempts on my part to keep the spirit alive was met with harsh retribution. Most years we hoped for the Christmas mornings my father, to drunk from the night before, didn't make it home. My sister and I could celebrate in secret, I always made sure she had something in her stocking on Christmas morning. During the not so bad years I might get a check/cash and maybe (if he remembered) a trip to a relative's home for some Christmas dinner.

After years of trying I am just too tired to try anymore.

A Good Christmas?

Christmas day last year was about as good as I has ever been for me. I was very, very upset at Darren that day. He was leaving that day to spend the holidays with friends and not me like he should. I was invited over to my friend Betsy's house for her world famous Tweety Bird Waffles and some perseco. It was a great day, I can't really say it was a great Christmas...there was little that day that reminded me of the holidays, but I felt very lucky that at least I wasn't alone.

I will never look at an elf the same way again

This was probably the most laid back weekend I've had in a long time. It was nice to not really have to be somewhere all the time.

After a short trip to Target I stayed in on Friday night and caught up on some sleep. I had spend the past two evenings with CRHB and he doesn't seem to mind staying up late. That's what I get for dating a younger man.

Saturday was a long day, I knew it would be. I got up early, cleaned the house a bit before heading OTP for a mt. bike ride with a new group of people. Realizing I had a little extra time I ran up to the Village to check out how things were going at Santa's Village (aka Joe's). I saw Scott, he was super busy so I grabbed a coffee, said hello to everyone and took off for Dausett.

It was such a beautiful day...temps in the 70s, the sun was out. Instead of meeting everyone in Cobb County I drove to Jackson alone. There was a little confusion when I arrived, trying to determine which group was mine. After some brief introductions we were off. It was a great ride, I did 11 miles and kept up with the front of the pack...which I was told was impressive since I only have flat peddles and not clips...they are coming soon.

I wasn't able to stick around to eat lunch with the crew since I had to head back to town to attend our team trivia finals. Long story short, the bar was ill prepared for such a crowd and I had to play pretty much sober. We didn't win but tried to have a good time.

Then it was back to EAV to catch the tail end of the 2nd annual progressive dinner party. Since the end was at CRHB's house I figured I would make an appearance...I wasn't the only one. Sometime later in the evening, Jangels the alcoholic elf arrived with shots in hand...it turned into a long night.

He's still at it.

Yes, I am a lucky girl, I can now check off 'make out with an elf' on life's to do list.

Practice makes Perfect

Last night WLB, PWD and I, MSI...all headed out for a night of business...we had to scout out trail for the 11th East Atlanta Hash House Harries Holiday Pub Crawl.

In spite of all the 'work' we had to do it was a great night out with the boys...we hit all our local faves. We met up at the Gravity Pub first. Gravity has fallen on hard times recently...it use to be one of the few places to hang out in EAV and was always a hash favorite. With the addition of so many new and nicer pubs/bars and having to close the downstairs, I'm sure they've seen a drop in business. Graveyard was next...we split a pitcher of Sam Adams, chatted with the bartender, who did know that WLB's last name means 'little nun' (I didn't know that). Next we headed to Grant Central to grab a bite to eat, I grabbed an eggplant sandwich (a little bland) and received a call from CRHB, we set up a 3rd date, yeah!!! Next to Mary's, one of my favorite spots in the Village I never go to...the three of walked in and increased the crowd by 300%. We told the bartender what we were up to and the one other patron said "you can't be hashers, you look too clean" we just about lost it. Apparently, this gentleman has run into our ilk before...he even made the added comment that I was far too pretty to be a hasher...the gays...they love me.

Last stop was the Flat Iron, where images of Paulie, playing Guitar Hero, in front of the big screen, alone in his basement will stay with me forever.

I'm not sure if we really accomplished anything but have a great night out with some good friends...but hey that is what the Pub Crawl is all about.

I hope to see everyone on Dec 15th for the real deal.

The Beer-muda Triangle Claims Another Victim

Yes it is true...not only did the Beer-muda Triangle lose another Sunday afternoon, it gained a new victim. Just Scott (aka the cute red headed boy) was sucked into an afternoon of beer drinking and bacon eating by yours truly.

We had a great crowd for the first Sunday Run of December. 12 runners and walker appeared on my doorstep around 9 am...in the normal hash tradition we took off around 9:17...

I over estimated my abilities as I tried to keep up with the big boys (Boner, HighDicker BigBore and PE) after about 2 miles I slipped back and eventually WLB and Boner Rooter caught up and I ran the rest of the way with them. As we passed the northwestern most corner of the BT we noticed a warning sign and a cooler of beer left by the resident. I wish we had a picture.

Shorty after our arrival back at Casa de la Martha Tasty Pie, Serious Sam and Quincy arrived after a long walk from Braeburn Circle.

It was a beautiful day, great friends helped to put a serious dent in the beer and bacon (5.5 pounds) surplus I had at the house.

After much debate I decided to give Scott a call and invite him over to hang out with us also. This was only our second 'date' and I was a little nervous...but he was going to find out anyway and sooner is better than later.

The evening went well...and there is a plan to see him again.
