My tour of duty is complete

I just finished my fifth month of bootcamp. YEAH ME!!!

I was looking at some old posts today, it wasn't until then I realized how much progress I have made in the last six months.

6 months ago Today
Run 1 mile 8:14 7:32
Push-ups 20 42
Sit-ups 8 36
Dips 20 45
Weight 141lb 129lb
% body fat 36% 30%
Waist 35in 31in
Hips 40in 36in

I've had a lot of encouragement and support over the last 6 months, from instructors, follow bootcamper and my good friends, thank you all!!!

I won't be attending bootcamp next month, I think a I need a little break and I'm going to use the money I'm saving to buy some new clothes, since none of my old ones fit anymore.

What's next??

Well I'm signed up for Mystery Mountain, a 12 mile trail run, the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving (hoping for a sub-2 hour time) and just for fun, the Romp and Stomp 5K.

Long term goals include a full marathon and a triathlon for 2009!

Sutset in Bethel

I was having a hard time turning of the lights and going to bed last night, at one point I saw it was 11:30 and I figured I might as well stay up and watch the sunset. It was totally worth it.

It was pink and blue and orange...pretty amazing to see. I couldn't get the perfect view because the ONE tree here in Bethel was blocking my view from the porch. I ventured out into the yard but was attacked my the giant, local mosquitoes. If it isn't raining you have to deal with these blood thirsty critters.

Today will be another slow work day for me. My colleagues are pouring over medical charts so there is little for me to do in the way of data checks/quality. I've been working on my programs for the end of the week, I need to remove all the dates (protocol states we can not take these back to Atlanta) and merge all the datasets. I've also just been documenting my programs, trying to think back to what we did over the last 10 days. So mostly busy work.

I left early yesterday and meandered home from the hospital. I walked about 5 miles yesterday and I'm hoping for at least that much today. I stopped off at the local art gallery, it was finally open. Not much in the way of native crafts, mostly photos. There were a couple of things that caught my eye, I may have to go back for something.

I stopped of at the Yukon Kuskokwim Wildlife Refuge yesterday, I was disappointed. It was one room filled with mostly dead, stuffed animals. The 'bookstore' was closed (it was a closet with some postcards) and there was nothing else to see. You need a plane to see most of the wildlife, there are birds around Bethel but little else.

Today I will try to check out the boat harbor, Moravian bookstore (for more local crafts) and the local cultural center (if it is open). Posted business hours seem to be more of a suggestion that a hard and fast rule around here. I assume it is because this is fishing season, most of the local still depend on fishing and hunting to supplement their diet. Most head out down the river to fish camps for up to a month at a time, to fish and process the food for the coming year. I guess when the weather is nice they have to take full advantage of it.

Well off to breakfast and getting my day started.

Please don’t take my sunshine away

Too late, the sun has left Bethel and the rain and wind have returned.

There really isn’t much to write about, I get up, try to go for a run, if the weather isn’t too bad, take a shower and head to the hospital for a ten hour day of work. The last two days it has been nice enough that we could walk home. The walk isn’t real enjoyable since I’m schlepping a lap top and all my other work stuff with me but it does kill some time.

We made an attempt at culture last night. The local ‘art gallery’ is on the way from the hospital to the B&B, I guess the nice weather made everyone want to play hooky so the gallery and Moravian bookstore next door were both closed.

Last night we stayed in and made dinner, we where going to watch “Brokeback Mountain” but the owner of the B&B has all the R-rated movies blocked…so it was Freaky Friday instead. I chose to head to my room to read and play on-line.

I’m beginning to get a little home sick, the weekend is over, my friends at home went to the pool, hashing, drinking in the Village, celebrated birthdays and I’ve been working and bored. I’m trying not to count down the days just yet but in less than 5 days I will be heading back to the ATL.

I will see you all very soon.

The Sun Only Shines on TV...in Bethel

Until today. Day 4 here in Bethel and I finally got to see the sun.

I'm finally adjusting to Bethel time...I woke up at 6 this morning, not my usual 4. I went out for a quick run, since we had to be at the hospital earlier than usual today. The first thing I noticed when I got outside was how quite it was...it wasn't raining and the wind wasn't blowing, I glanced off to the east and saw a sliver of sunlight. I had high hopes for the day. Of course everyday I think I'm going to walk past a window and see nothing but bright blue skies...today it happened!

My excitement was somewhat short lived when I realized, I was working and probably would be until well past 6, like everyday this week. Rumor had it that today's work was to be especially challenging. Crap, I was worried this would be my only chance to check things out and enjoy some reasonably good weather.

Well somehow, some way, the issue that caused so much distress on the last visit was resolved very quickly (and I get bonus points from co-workers, even though I don't know what I did to fix it). I started to do some Saturday work, hoping the good weather would remain and I could enjoy it tomorrow. Instead we got the go ahead to leave early today, by early we ONLY put in an eight hour day.

It was so nice out, around 60, sunny, just a touch of a breeze. We all agreed we should walk home. Bethel is small enough to walk pretty much everywhere. So we made a stop at the local 'Wal-mart type' store (I have to go back and pick up some winter gear, it was the only cheap thing there) for more provision for the house, then stopped by Demetre's for a dinner of pizza and salad and walked back to the White House. It was still early, only about 6:30 so we made a plan to take a walk down to the river.

On the way home from dinner we where attacked my mosquitoes, Shin wasn't prepared to go back out. Lucy and I were on our own.

The river was nice, it's been so long since I've been near water, we saw a water plane take off and you could smell the ocean (Bethel is only about 40 miles from the sea). We got rained on but it was a very pleasant adventure. I hope I can head back for more exploring tomorrow. I wish I could post some pictures.

It looks like the weather is going to hold through tomorrow and it looks like I am going to have a short day. I'm planning on checking out the local market and more exploring of the river and other off the road places.

It's after 9 and I still have 3 more hours of day light. I would really like to stay up once to see the sun 'set'.

Tomorrow I will tell you about the sticker shock at the grocery store.

Today in Bethel

Even though it is currently 45 degrees, rainy and windy, I'm heading outside for a bit. I'm beginning to get cabin fever. The sun is rising so maybe I can grab a few pictures before I start my day. I'm really wishing I had brought a hat.

Mush doggie...

I'm sitting here in my room listening to the pack of sled dogs outside, yes real live sled dogs. Each chained to a small shelter, sitting on a wooden pallet. I'm not a big fan of sled racing, there is a lot of controvery about how the dogs are treated, this is Alaska and this is what these dogs are bred for ... so I am keeping my feelings to myself. It is feeding time right now and they are all worked up. I wish I had remembered to bring the cable for my camera so you could see for yourself.

There are lots of dogs here, mostly roaming lose. There are no leash laws so the mutt just come and go as they please. Most don't seem to fond of people, they have all kept their distances so far. I'm hoping for a photo stroll, if/when the weather clears up a bit.

The weather has been miserable. Rainy, cold, overcast and now the wind has really picked up. I ran yesterday morning and I was able to walk home from dinner last night but otherwise, I've been inside or had to take a taxi. Fingers crossed for tomorrow, I got a tip on a nice trail that runs along the river.

Work has been brutal, the past two days have been 10+ hours, with just a small break for lunch. There is a cafeteria at the hospital, fair on a good day. Maybe tomorrow I can make it to the store for some extra rations. My co-workers and I stayed in this evening, we made tuna sandwiches and fruit salad. To be honest I wasn't feeling like going out tonight, the restaurants are pretty shabby and you can't get a drink, so I was happy to save most of my per deim for today.

Speaking of work, it seems to be going well. My co-workers seemed pleased with the rate and substance of the work I'm doing, along with being entertained with my pleasant personality ;-)
I can't imagine I will be this busy next week...with any luck I'll have some time off to go exploring and picture taking.

It is still early, only 8:15 but I'm still on Atlanta time, I'm going to try to stay up a little longer but I'm beat.

If I don't get completely frustrate with this painfully slow internet connection I'll write more tomorrow.

Night everyone!!!

I made it

Wow, after 18 hours I finally made it to Bethel. What a day, I arrived at the B&B just before I collapsed from exhaustion. I had high hopes when I got to Anchorage, the sky was clear and the temperature mild...no such luck in Bethel.

While the sun is 'shining' almost 20 hours a day here, I have yet to see it or the thermometer rise above 50. I woke this morning to the same drizzle that lulled me to sleep last night. It didn't stop me from going out on my first Alaskan jog. I headed out about 5:30 am, lets just say, Bethel in July is like Atlanta in January.

I've got to go to bed, it was another long day.

Monday, July 14, 2008

I'm off...

Well almost, it is 7:15 am my flight is in two and a half hours, I'm packed (I can't go over my list one more time), the house is ready and I'm just waiting on my taxi.

It's going to be a long day, I will land in Bethel around 8 pm local time, midnight here.

Last night I happened upon a show called "Tougher in Alaska" on A&E...makes me very glad I'm not going in the winter.

Boot Camp Update

So not only did I finish my 1st round of boot camp, I didn't miss a day in 4 weeks. I signed up for a second and a third month.

I won't be able to complete this month because of the trip but I will make up the two weeks I will miss in August.

I have to admit, the results are better than I had hope and I've surprised myself with what I've been able to do.

In the past 10 weeks I've lost about 10 pounds (7% of my body weight), more important, I've lost about 15% body fat, I swear I saw a bicep muscle the other day. I've noticed a big difference in my abs, one part of my body I've never been happy with, and I'm a lot stronger in my core than I was 10 weeks ago.

I'm going to miss boot camp while I'm gone. I intend to keep up with my workouts but I will never push myself as hard as I get pushed there. It is some of the best money I've ever spent.

At the end of the first month I went from being able to do 20 push up to almost 50!

Back but not for long

Today someone reminded me that I have a blog, who would have thought, right?

Crazy couple of months, between work, bootcamp, the boyfriend and having a little fun, there hasn't been much time to sit in front of the computer to write it all down.

I'm leaving in a few days for a big work trip. I'll be heading the Bethel, Alaska for 12 days. This trip has been in the works for quite awhile but it still snuck up on me. I'm staying in tonight and multi-tasking getting ready for the trip and making good use of a loaner lap top with a working CD drive.

Months ago, in a vain attempt to unclutter my house, I packed away all my CDs. I haven't listen to most of them since I got Sirus radio a couple of years ago. I wasn't quite ready to toss them all out though. So tonight I'm ripping CDs on to the lap top and then transferring them to my home computer, since the CD/DVD drive crapped out months ago.

I'm also trying to consolidate the many lists I've made for this trip. I have to pack more than I normally would for three reasons. 1) I will not have access to a washing machine for my entire trip, so I need enough clothes to last the trip. 2) Bethel is pretty remote, if I don't bring it, I probably can't buy it there and if I can it is going to be very expensive. 3) The weather is crazy so I need to bring tons of things I can layer.

On the bright side I get to finally use my big suitcase that I haven't used in 5 years and the fridge is going to get cleaned out.

I'm hoping to get most of my packing and the majority of my cleaning done tonight, so I can play and spend time with my friends this weekend. I'm not going to like being away from everyone for so long...I hope there is a big party for me when I return ;-)

I'm planning on updating this site while I'm gone in what I hope is not a useless attempt to stay in touch.

I wont have cell phone reception and I'll only be able to get online at night so be patient with me if I don't respone right away.

Good Bye Ruben

Ruben 199? - 2008

We said good bye to sweet old Ruben today. He left us peacefully, it was time for him to rest.

I'll write more later...

Working from home

Well I'm on week 2 of working from home, thanks to a broken water pipe in my office building. They still haven't given us a 'return date' so I'm just trying to enjoy the extra flexibility, not to mention saving at the gas pump, while I can.

I did a REALLY SILLY thing this week, I started bootcamp. Yes, I'm paying someone money, so I can get up at 5 am to exercise in the dark. The first two days have been less than perfect. Day 1 began with a downpour. A bunch of drowned rats, standing in the middle of Grant Park. It was an easy day as far as the workout went. It was orentation and our inital physical fitness test.

My result were:

Run 1 mile - 8:14 (second fastest in the group)
20 push-ups + 6 facilitated (girl) push-ups
20 sit ups
8 dips + 20 bent knee dips

I'll let you know if there is any improvement over the next 4 weeks.

Today it was COLD and WET...no rain but the ground, which we spent a lot of time on today was soaked and muddy. It was harder today, that's good, I felt a little cheated yesterday...it was mostly abs, something that needs a lot of improvement.

They also have us on a diet/meal plan. Six small meals a day, eating protien with each one. That has been a challenge, since I don't eat a lot of meat...and the meat I do eat is usually pretty bad for you (can you say Bacon)?

BBQ Brisket

Oh god, speaking of things that our bad for you. Sunday was a day devoted to all those things.

Let me describe the sceen...two large BBQ Briskets, a keg of Sweetwater 420, and a pot luck dinner for about 30...Brad finally dragged me home sometime after dark. A good move on his part since the beer and food was all going down way to easy.

It was a great afternoon, Paulie, Meridith, Brad and I spent much of the day joking with each other next to the keg! Really, where did you think we would be?

Ruben Update

My little man isn't doing very well. He's not eating much, even when I cook for him, you all know I'm a good cook and he's lost a lot of weight. He sleeps most of the day now. I was able to get him an appointment today for some "GI" issues he's having. Through it all he is still such a sweet boy.

Quick UpDate

Sorry I haven't been posting much, been pretty busy the last few weeks.

I know (and I'm very thankful) everyone is wondering how Ruben is doing. Currently, he is still eating and feeling okay. He sleeps a lot but when he is awake or when others are around he is active and engaged. He's working mom...I'm cooking chicken, steak, eggs, etc. for his meals...he's given up dog food for good I think. He's still losing weight and having some other 'GI' issues...if you know what I mean. It has been five weeks since his ultrasound and diagnosis. Funny bit is none of the hair that they shaved for the ultrasound has grown back.

I was away for the weekend, I was so concerned leaving him but he was in GREAT hands. Nancy (EZ Cheeks) spent a ton of extra time at the house and even planned a welcome home party for me on Sunday!! (more to come on that topic)

I'm working at home this week and most likely next also. A pipe leaked, then broke at the office and damaged two floors of the building. I went in today to pick up some files and my office is trashed. It doesn't look like anything other than the carpet and walls were damaged, I think my computer is okay (it was on a cart off the floor) but I can't access it at this time.

I'm working on the summary of my great weekend, sharing a cabin and mountain biking with Brad and other friends in Tsali, NC. I have a lot to share.

I'll work on that tomorrow!!!

Thanks everyone for checking it, more to come.

Ruben Watch 2008

We had our follow up visit yesterday afternoon.

Nothing really new to report on Ruben. He has lost a bit more weight (he's down to 38 pounds). We are starting him on some steroids and some anti-nausea medication, hoping to increase is appetite a bit...otherwise...not much more to do.

The vet is thinking a few days to a month at most. I just need to keep an eye on him, watch how he is reacting...if he really seems to be suffering or in pain, not interacting, stops eating all together, etc...it will be time. The other issue that was a big concern for me was the very real possibility of the tumor rupturing and him bleeding to death internally. The vet said if it does happen, it will be very quick and not painful...that is good. I just don't want a big traumatic event or him to suffer if it happens and I'm not home.

It hard, he's such a happy little boy...even though I know he doesn't feel well.

On the good side the old man gets to eat what ever he wants... :-) I took him with my on Sunday to Bwana's so he could see everyone and spend time some time out of the house, he had a very good day. He even had enough energy to put that young upstart Sydney in his place.

Ruben being spoiled post race

Thank you again to everyone for your thoughts and well wishes...it means a lot to all of us.

RunnING

On Sunday, around 9:15 am, I finished my second half marathon.

ING result

In case you are having trouble reading this I finished with a chip time of 2:01:57.While I didn't hit my goal of a sub-two hour run, I was still happy to complete the run and enjoyed myself.

I spent the first 2/3 of the run with Paulie, it was great to run with him. We've spent lots of time together on training runs so it felt very comfortable. For better or worse, my strategy is to 'power up' most hills, usually cursing under my breath, then I slow back down once I get to the top. This works for us...Paulie being more of a steady runner than me...however, once out of Piedmont Park and up (yet another) hill, I lost him. I looked back and didn't see him at all. I really did think about just stopping and waiting for him but I knew he would have wanted me to go on and quite honestly I thought if I stopped I may never start again.

So inspite of suffering through a nasty blister (beginning around mile 3) and a 13.3 (yes, not 13.1) route, I'm ready for Twisted Ankle in May.

The Aftermath (I mean After Party)

After FINALLY getting my bag, Paulie and I along with some guy neither of us knew made the March of the Peguins back to Marta and then to our cars. Instead of heading straight for Bwana's and the beer, I made a detour to my house to shower and change...I knew they would save a mug or two for me.

Brad came and picked me up (yeah, no driving) and we grabbed Ruben also and headed to the northern most corner of the beermuda triangle to celebrate our victories!

We sat around until maybe 3? Geez what a day. Then it was back to Brad's where he cooked me a lovely, post race dinner of salmon and other goodies, including two more bottles of wine.

I was fast asleep by about 9...it was a very good day.

One day at a time...

The news wasn't good today at the vet.

In summary:

an adbominal ultrasound was performed and it revealed a large, cavitary splenic mass. Most likely (80-90%) this is a hemangiosarcoma, along with the mass they found dark spots on his liver (signs that the cancer has metastased) and things do not looke good for my boy. The prognosis with surgery (a splenectomy) is only 2 or 3 months (could be less if the cancer has spread).

I am going to make an appointment with our regular vet to discuss end of life care for my Rubi...I just want him to be happy and comfortable for however long he has left. So tonight he is getting ground turkey for dinner.

Thank you everyone for all your good thoughts we both are very greatful.

Off to the Vet

Ruben and I will be leaving for the vet in a short while...I will post more later.

Wish us luck.

Out for a Spin

On Tuesday I finally bought the road bike. I think I got a good deal for a decent 'starter' bike. She still doesn't have a name...

Here she is

Ms No Name

She is thin, small and green, any ideas?

I ran over to Performance Cycle (Bike)? They had tons of stuff on sale, 50% off. I was able to get SPD pedals for only $20. Brad wants me to start shopping for him, since I'm so good at finding a deal ;-)

I took her out for her inaugural ride tonight. I rode about 10 miles and ran by Brad's (I was wondering why he hadn't returned my text, I never sent it DUH!). He suited up and went out with me for a little bit longer. I'm really excited, it is such a different experienace than the mountain bike, not better, just different. I'm now looking forward to my first road bike race in May.

Super Terrific Fantastic News

I just found out last night that the date for the East Atlanta Beer Festival as been changed from May 10th to May 31st.

I was truly torn. I wanted to be a good girl friend and accompany Brad to Up the Creek Without a Pedal but it was the same day as the EABF, which I have volunteered at for the past three year. It is always such a blast!!

Now I can do both.

May is going to be a CRAZY month.

May 10th - Up the Creek Without a Pedal (I think I'll do the 30 mile option)
May 17th - Twisted Ankle Half Marathon
May 24th & 25th - Bike/Wine Tour in North Carolina (tentative)
May 31st - East Atlanta Beer Festival

Pet Update

Kate

Last week I heard of a dog, a sweet little beagle mix, that needed a place to stay for a week or so. She was coming in from Athens and most likely has a home to go to once her vet work is done. Kate was dropped of last week by Andy and Morgan from Atlanta Beagle Rescue.

Kate is a sweet little girl, she wants to cuddle and be petted. House breaking has been hit or miss but she has a belly full of worms that are causing some problems. She started medication for that issue yesterday and will be better soon. She is also going in tomorrow to be spayed, after a few days to recover she should be on her way to a new home with a Golden big brother and three human sisters.

Toby

Today was the boys turn to visit the vet. Toby is doing okay, other than being a big pig. He weighted in at 74 pounds...not good. The diet starts today. We also had some trouble drawing blood for his annual heartworm test. The unique anatomy of the basset along with all the extra skin makes finding a blood vessel and then taping it a little difficult. The poor guys must have felt like a pin cushion by the time they got what they needed. Otherwise he seems happy and healthy.

Ruben

I've been a little worried about Ruben the last few weeks. He doesn't seem to be as energetic, he hasn't been eating great and he is getting up there, we are guessing he will be about 11 this year. The news at the vet today wasn't great. He has developed a heart murmur, his tummy seems very hard and he has a slight fever. They are doing a complete blood/urine panel on him and we are holding off on the vaccination, at least until the fever breaks. He also has an appointment Friday for some chest and abdominal x-rays. Oh, he has an ear infection also.

I'm trying to keep positive thoughts...it has been awhile since I've lost a pet (Ellie was the last one, about 3 years ago). I know Ruben is old, I know up until he came to me he had a very hard life. I hope that the last 5 years have been happy times for him, I know they have been for me.

Ending on a Funny Note

Here is an action shot of Toby, if you look closely you can see the slobber flying in the air...

Only $156.82 - Really?

So yesterday I received my annual Dividend Summary from REI...according to them I only spent $156.82 at REI last year? I'm suprised. Well, maybe not. I'm not sure when I purchased my membership but it was sometime later in the year. Sometimes I feel like I live at REI and now that it is right down the road from my new office, it is only going to get worse.

Very soon I will be making a large purchase, stay tuned for the big annoucement.

Too much stuff or just poor organization?

I stayed home last night, Tuesday is generally my off day for running/biking. I did 'pop' in an exercise DVD in the morning (since I work at 4:30 am) and did a little strech and tonning but gave my knees a rest for the evening.

Instead of going out for some fun at trivia, I stayed home and tried to organize things. I started with the kitchen, cleaned out cupords, organized pot, pans, bakeware and tossed some odds and ends. I feel better. I have realized I have a big project I need to start on the house. My 'extra room', where the washer/dryer and other assorted crap is stored, needs a make over. With the addition of 2 new bikes in the near future I need more space. Since building an addition is not in the current plan and I don't trust the bikes in a shed outside...better storage seems to be the way to go.

I've found some neat ideas for storing 2 of the 3 bikes...but I still need to make some space and I just don't know what to do. If anyone has some ideas I'd be happy to hear them. One thing I am torn about is I have a ceadar chest that my grandfather made...it is big, it is bulky, it isn't my style and I really don't have room for it...but my grandfather made it. I didn't know my grandfather, he died when my mother was still an infant...it is one of the few 'family heirlooms' I have...so I just can't get rid of it.

Depressing thought for the day...

I need to run 30 to 35 miles just to loose one pound if I don't change my diet....

A Clean Slate

Today is the first day of the...blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, I know I've been slack about posting this last month...so much has happened, most of it good but just enough bad to put me in a temporary slump.

So the last month or so I've been dumped, got into a huge public scene with the ex, went to a great neighborhood party, reconnected with an old flame, got a new boyfriend, learned of the passing of a friends dog, qualified for the Peachtree (time group 1B), got a new job, have met a ton of new people and started the EAV Running Group.

Do you see why I haven't had time to blog?

Let's get the badness out of the way first. CRHB (aka Scott) and I broke up, things seemed okay, not wonderful but fun. He just started flaking on me, not making plans, etc...I just came out and asked him 'Do you want to date or not'... he's confused, not sure, to me any answer not a yes is a no. There are no hard feelings, he is a nice, fun person but I think I just liked the idea of liking him. I don't really think it would have worked with us, while we had many things in common and I enjoyed his company...the differences in our personalities would have doomed the relationship sooner than later.

Of course the loss of another relationship didn't put me in the best of moods. So at a friends Super Bowl Party it didn't take much for D to push the right buttons and send me into a rage. It wasn't pretty and I'm not proud of myself. I was in a funk for several days wondering what I needed to do to stop this insanity and being angry with myself for letting this man still get to me.

My good friend Kay (aka Tasty Pie) lost her beloved dog Genghis. Genghis was a wild child, making a break for it whenever he found the opportunity. Sadly he slipped out of his collar one Sunday afternoon and was hit by a car. I can't begin to do the story justice, I found out by reading Kay's Blog I spent the rest of the afternoon in tears. Kay I still can't tell you how sorry I am.

Now for the good news:

I had vowed to myself late last year I was going to get out more, spend a little more time away from the hash and meeting new people. The plus side of being with Scott was, I got more involved with folks in the neighborhood, or as they are also known the buzzers.

Days after the break up with Scott, my good friend Paulie and I attended a local pizza party on Glennwood Ave. While there I bumped in to a fellow buzzer and one time date, Brad.

I've spoke with Brad several times (mostly about biking) over the past few years, said hi to him while out in the local bars, dog park, etc and didn't think much of it as I was usually in a 'relationship'. Long story short when I got home there was a wonderful email from him asking if I would consider revisiting us dating again. It has been a great 3 weeks and still going strong. We are even planing a few trips for spring/summer...that's pretty amazing in my book. ;-)

I also got a new job, I started yesterday. I have accepted a position in Maternal and Infant Health, Applied Sciences Branch. I will be doing more data analysis and collaborating than in my last job, I think I'm going to be happy here. Plus, it is considered an promotion and I did get a little bump in pay.

My running is paying off. On a whim I decided to do the Charles Harris 10K last Saturday morning. I finished in 53:11 which was good enough to qualify for the Peachtree 10K in July. This was also 9 minutes faster than my last 10K not quite a year ago. Next up the Atlanta Women's 5K and ING Half Marathon.

To stay on the running topic just a bit longer. I've been trying to make it to George's once and a while to run with other folks, one night I showed up, cocky from the previous week's run with the big boys. Apparently, my head was too heavy for the rest of my body and not 3 block into the run I fell...okay fell is an understate men, I caught air, smashed into the ground and didn't stop until my hard, inflated head hit a metal post. Okay this sounds bad right? Well I kept running, just slower than I had planned. While running I was stated talking to this woman, Sharon. Well Sharon lives in my 'hood, she is an afore mentioned buzzer. WE talked about having someone in local to run with, well we made the decision right there to start an EAV version of the George's run, so now we (and anyone that wants to join us) meet in front of Gravity on Monday nights and take a run through EAV/Oremwood Park. Last night we had 10 people show up.

Sharon has also been joining me for some local get togethers and mt. biking. Her, along with Brad are currently convincing me I need a road bike. Stay tuned for a new member of the family in the next couple of weeks.

Okay so there is my update, I'll try to be more current in the future.

Stay tuned I'm sure I will have lots to talk about in the coming weeks...Brad, the new job, running/biking success stories.

Friday Weigh-in

Sorry there has been no post in awhile. I have several drafts started, I just can't seem to finish anything right now.

Scale: 133.5 lbs

I have busted my ass this past week:

Since last Saturday I've ran 26 miles and rode the bike three times, once on the Black trails at Big Creek and twice in the neighborhood.

I'm planning on another short ride through the 'hood tonight, weather permitting, to try out the new pedals, wish me luck.

As far as my new year's goals, I've had one set back this week and seeing great progress on another. More news to follow on both.

Month End Summary:

Running 58 Miles
Biking 68 Miles

Could it be love??

I saw this on tv the other day...and after just trying to clean the couch with my old vacumm cleaner I'm thinking about an upgrade. Everyone seems to love it.

Bissell 3920 Pet Hair Eraser Dual-Cyclonic Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Let's see what the car repairs end up costing me, Martha is just tossing money around right now.

I know my dogs...

No, no not the men I date. I was able cinch a win last night for Team Donkey Punch - The Original by knowing the Top Ten most popular dog breeds according to the AKC.

1. Labrador Retriever
2. Yorkshire Terrier
3. German Shepherd Dog
4. Golden Retriever
5. Beagle
6. Boxer
7. Dachshund
8. Poodle
9. Shih Tzu
10. Bulldog

The only two I wasn't completly sure of was the Boxer and the Shih Tzu (okay so that is how you spell it). We were the only team to get them all right.

My beloved Basset Hounds were ranked 31st.

A long weekend wrap-up

It was a long weekend...I took off a little early on Friday and it seemed non-stop until Tuesday.

Probably the most exciting thing to happen this weekend was snow in Atlanta. Yes, really snow, not a few flurries but maybe an inch or so. This did not prevent me from enjoying the great out doors. More about that in a bit.

Friday night I had a date, we met at the FlatIron and then headed over to Graveyard to celebrate their second anniversary with free food and beer. We bumped into several locals and buzzers, drank several free beer and shots, headed over to The Glennwood when the music got a little to loud for the old folks. There more shots and a few Monkeys were consumed...I think we then head to a house party...it started to get a little blurry. It was a fun night but not the 'laid back' evening that we had planned.

I did blow off my 10k on Saturday morning. I combo of being hungover (thanks guys), rain, cold and wind kept me snug in Scott's bed until 8 or so when I finally got up to go home and take care of the boys. Rain turned to snow and I figured what better thing to do than go hashing. I really didn't think a lot of folks would show up but the hash is full of surprises...about 20 people showed up and about 10 ran the trail. It was a good run, I was FBI (if you don't count BWanA) and I felt a little less guilty about skipping my race.

After the previous nights activity, I wasn't really in the mood to drink or party...I went home early, made some dinner and some chili for the next day and stayed on the couch for the rest of the evening.

Sunday morning was COLD, F-ing COLD....I had to meet my friend Wil at 9 am (temp 18 degrees, with a wind chill) to lay the Wheelhopper trail for the day. I was wondering if the work would be in vain, who in their right mind would come out to ride in this weather? Well take a look:

Again the hash surprises me...

Again the hash surprises me. Thanks to Scott for letting us end at his place and being such a great host.

Our host...finally relaxing!

Monday was a day of rest for me. I got a hair cut (much needed) and treated myself to lunch at Nick's.

I'll be trying for another pound for next week.

Celebrate with Shoes

That wasn't the orginal title of this post but it seems to work.

I had a meeting with HR today about the curret 'environment' here at work. No major problems...I just wanted her to know why I am looking for a new position. It went well and they are behind me if anything 'bad' goes down here at the office.

Since I was all the way 85 I decided to stop of at my new favorite store, REI, for a little shopping. I controled myself and walked out with only one pair of bike shoes. Check these babies out!!

On my way back to the office I received a phone call from the hiring manager, the client is very interested in my and they are setting up an appointment for next week. I was now able to convice myself that the shoes are just a little 'gift' for making the next step to a new job.

I also am celebrating my first run with the A Group/BigBoys last night a George's. I was hoping to run with my friend Paulie, but he was running late, stuck in a meeting. The ladies were having a hard time making a decision, I was ready to go. The boys invited me to run with them, I wasn't very confident but figured I would run a mile with them and then be on my own. Well I was able to stick with them until the last half mile or so (I think they picked up the pace, that may just be wishful thinking on my part). Anyway, the important thing is I held on for about 5 miles...I have a 10K next weekend, I'm as ready as I'm going to be. I will not be running tonight, I'm a little sore and I'm meeting the CDC H3 for happy hour at Tin Roof Cantina...I'm ready for that maragrita right now!!

It's Only Wednesday????

Okay so this is the first full week of work I have done in ages and it is taking its toll on me this week. I laid in bed last night, contemplating what I was going to do this weekend, when I realized it was still days away. The fact that I HATE my job, more and more everyday is not helping. I sat in a meeting today, where my boss taught us SAS 101. I've been a SAS programmer for more than seven years...this was very frustrating and a complete waste of my time. Like most of what I do here, it seemed useless.

On that note...I have been speaking with HR and a recruiter within my company. My current boss knows I'm looking for something else and the recruiter wasn't surprised to hear that someone on my project was looking for another job. I applied for another data management position, with the Global Tobacco Control Program. This job seems more along the lines of 'real' public health and it involves international travel. I will need to make arrangements for the boys and the hash will have to learn to get along without me from time to time but there really isn't anything keeping me here. I was told the hiring manager is keen to speak with me and I'm awaiting his call.

I'll keep you all up to date when I hear something. Keep your fingers crossed.

I lost a dealership...

So today I was scheduled to take the car in to the Ford dealership for some much needed repairs. Yesterday afternoon I went on line and set up an appointment to meet with a 'service advisor'. I got up early today, packed my biking clothes (I was planning on droping the car off and biking the 3 miles to the office) and drove up to Scott Blvd to do what needed to be done. When I got there the entire dealership was gone!!! No cars, no people, nothing...at first I was stunned, I drove by twice just to make sure I wasn't seeing things...now I'm a little pissy. I took time off, drove out of my way and then got stuck in unnecessary traffic because someone was too lazy to up date a web site?? It isn't like they just changed the hours of operation ... the place is GONE.

I tried calling and I've sent emails to both the dealership and Ford, I don't expect to get a response. So now I need to find a new mechanic. If you know of a good one in the Emory area or the East Atlanta area or anywhere in between please pass along the information to me. Thanks.

Off to a good start

So I did make it to the gym last night, I spent an hour on the elipical machine. As of this morning I was down 1.5 pounds. I think some of this 'excess holiday' weight will come of pretty quick, as always it will be those last 5 pounds that get me.

By the time I went to the gym and the store it was well after 7 when I got home. I sort of like it that way, less time at the house, less time alone, less time sitting on the couch eating. The only bad thing is the boys are there for 11 hours, with no break. Maybe I should start to consider a doggie door in the near future.

A pretty low key weekend is in the works. I'm going to head over to my friend Stacy's for a little wine this evening and most likely meet up with the boy afterwards. Saturday is a hashing day and a party in Cabbage Town that night. I'm thinking about skipping hashing on Sunday, maybe take the bike out for a spin, maybe see if the boy will let me cook for him. I need a little more time away from the hash, it is really hard to cut back on your drinking when you hang around drunks all the time.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope everyone had a good and safe time on Monday night. It was pretty uneventful over here at Martha's House. I met up with my friend Nancy early in the evening for a few beers at The FlatIron, then met up with Scott for a few more before he was off to his concert and I was off to a party at Beans house.

I stuck around Bean's until the Karaoke and Old Man Soup in the hot tub got to be too much, I took one last spin around the village and went home. I was comfortably asleep on the couch by 2 AM. It was nice waking up Tuesday with no hangover.

So I guess it is time to list my 'resolutions', though that is not what I'm calling them.

1) Don't take things so personally, if someone is acting like an ass it isn't my fault, they are just an ass
2) Lose 13 pounds (I had to up this after all the 'holiday cheer' I inhaled the last few weeks)
3) Find a new job that I enjoy
4) Run at least 2 half marathons this year
5) Keep up with the house cleaning
6) Pay off my last credit card
7) Finish one project around the house

Okay some of those aren't too specific, others hard to measure but hey what do you expect. I'll keep you posted on my progress, maybe I should add 'blog more often' to that list.
